Steering Committee Minutes

March 1, 2007

In attendance: Bill Rich, Woody Newport, Jim Roetzel, Jim Schmidt, Ed Toerek, Bruce Winges, Diane Young, and Mike Scocos.

Absent with notice: Darren DeBoo, Sylvia Banks.

  1. Minutes: Minutes of the February 1, 2007 meeting were adopted.
  2. President’s Report. Jim Schmidt reported that Darren DeBoo has resigned as workshop coordinator.
  3. Workshops: Woody has agreed to resume position of workshop coordinator with assistance from Jim Schmidt. Only six members have signed up for the Spring tour and three for the Fall workshop.
  4. Photo Contest: Joanna Caley from CVNPA joins the meeting for a discussion of the Photo Contest location. Committee members articulate their belief that the M.D. Garage is inappropriate for the contest because it is too small, and lighting is not good. Joanna says that the Garage is in a good location with lots of traffic.

Mike points out that the Photo Society has more to do with the mission of the Park than renting out Happy Days to weddings. He is insulted by the situation.

Jim Roetzel says the best place for the contest needs to be “clean and well-lighted; we’re as open as Denny’s.”

Committee decides to hold the contest at Happy Days Nov. 5-27. Joanna will check on Happy Days availability. Joanna also will start a dialog with Hale Farm as a possible site in the future for the contest.

One point that to remember that Joanna made: Reserving sites in the Park, particularly for the workshops, are on a first-come first-served basis. The earlier that we can make decisions regarding workshops the better chance we have of getting the facilities that we want.

  1. Monthly presentations: Woody will contact owner of Ruppel’s Art Supply about doing the July presentation on how to frame prints. Other possible topic: Panel discussion on the state of photography.
  2. Photo Walks: A photo walk waiver will be added to the photo walk attendance sheets.

Unanswered question: Can we put together a one-page sheet to be passed out at the photo walks on what you need to do to join the Photo Society?

  1. Calendar: Jim Schmidt will join the editing committee along with Bruce Winges, Jim Roetzel, Sylvia Banks, Bill Rich and Sue Kirkman.
  2. Other: Ed Toerek showed a power point presentation he put together to promote the society at the monthly presentations. Member images taken at the photo walks and workshops will be included with permission of the photographer.
  3. Meeting Dates: The next meeting will be held as previously scheduled on Thursday, April 5th
